Assisted suicide. This is a severe issue to tackle and as a Christian, what do you think of this difficult subject and what does the Bible have to say about this?

As followers of Christ let’s remember that it is God who gives us the power to live. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” It’s saying that what you simply say can have a powerful impact on your life.

On the cover of TIME magazine it’s recently been covering the issue of anxiety and depression, especially among youth. “Anxiety and depression among high school kids have been on the rise since 2012 after several years of stability. It’s a phenomenon that cuts across all demographics.”

In 2014, 6,122 suicides were registered in the UK. This corresponds to a suicide rate of 10.8 per 100,000 people.
Popular culture may say it is ok for you to rely on your feelings or your pain. You could just take a pill and die and pass up all the sufferings of this world.

What does the Bible say about this?

Exodus 15:26 says, “…for I, the LORD, am your healer.” It is a simple statement but it brings the broken pieces of life together.

We are living in a difficult time but we can still overcome. We are reminded to not give up because Hebrews 6:19 says that, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Instead of suffering a long, unbearable death, some choose to turn to a poisonous drink prescribed by doctors. But God is encouraging the world to not give up on hope and just end life and die. He heals us of every sickness and blasts away all depression, anxiety and fear.

We can’t rely on our feelings because feelings go as quickly as they come. Ephesians 4:14 says, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.”

God has bigger plans than anything we may have in mind. And we just need to trust him with that. Assisted suicide is a topic that needs to be addressed. As a young believer you can reach out to those who are in desperate need of your encouragement and love. Be sensitive. Have a heart for the people around you.

God is the author and finisher of our faith. If you’re heart is still beating then you still have something on earth to accomplish. Believe in the healing power of God. Psalm 91:16 says that, “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” God wants us to have a long, satisfying life. Psalm 103:5 says, “He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!”

Nobel Peace Prize winners, leaders, champions – we all come to the realization that life ends. But with this life we can make our mark for the Kingdom of God and rest our hearts in the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, who has our life in His hands.
